Shellacs and bone glues
Shellac
Shellac is a natural resin of animal origin, derived from the lac worm native to Southeast Asia. It is a natural protective agent used in wood finishing, providing surface protection and a glossy appearance. Shellac dissolves only in high-concentration alcohol and contains no wax.
Hide Glue / Bone Glue
Adhesives made from animal products such as hides, bones, and fish are known as glutin adhesives. The glue is obtained by boiling scraps of hides, bones, horns, hooves, and other animal by-products. The main component of these adhesives is a protein called glutin, which turns into a colloidal solution when heated in water.
